ACT Human Rights Commission
The ACT Human Rights Commission is an independent statutory authority that promotes the human rights and welfare of people living in the ACT. We provide an impartial, fair and accessible one-stop shop for complaints of unlawful discrimination, and complaints about health services, services for older people, disability services and services for children and young people.
The ACT Human Rights Commission's mandate in the areas of human rights and discrimination is to promote human rights by administering the Discrimination Act 1991, Human Rights Act 2004 and the Human Rights Commission Act 2005. We were the first jurisdiction in Australia to have an explicit statutory basis for respecting, protecting, fulfilling and promoting civil and political rights.
A major part of our work is to handle complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment, vilification (on the grounds of race, sexuality or HIV/AIDS status) or victimisation.
Complaints
All discrimination complaints to the ACT Human Rights Commission must be made in writing. Using the Commission's Discrimination Complaint Form will help you provide the important information we need to consider your complaint.
Before you fill in the form you may wish to discuss the matter with an Enquiries Officer who can give you information about anti-discrimination law, our jurisdiction and how the office handles complaints. Training and education
The ACT Human Rights Commission conducts training workshops throughout the year on a range of topics relevant to discrimination and human rights. We can also conduct training tailored to your organisation. For more information please visit the Education and Training page of our website.
